General Questions
How do I register online?
Please see instructions here. (TBD) Online registration is quick and easy, however, there are a few minor things to be aware of to ensure the process runs smoothly.
What programs are available for online registration?
All of our camps and classes are available for online registration. Some programs have prerequisite requirements for current participants. (See “Instructional Class” section below.)
All of our leagues are eligible for online registration. In fact, we require online registration for our Youth Pond Hockey League, and will be requiring it in the future for our Adult Pond Hockey League.
How else can I register?
You can also register over the phone at 514-695-4368 or at our front desk during our business hours.
Can I reserve a spot and pay later?
No, we do not accept any registrations without full payment at the time of registration.
What is your refund policy?
Refund policies for all registrations and rentals can be found here.
Do you have Drop-In/Shinny Hockey?
No we don’t. Occasionally we may offer Drop-In Hockey on a school ped day, which we will mention on our social media if that is the case.
Do you offer private lessons?
We do, for both skating and hockey. Private lessons start at $90/30 minutes; the fee includes both the ice time and the instructor’s fee. (Generally you will be alone on the ice with your instructor, unless you have arranged for a semi-private lesson.) Rates increase according to the time slot, instructor’s fees and number of students on the ice.
If you choose to do private lessons, the next step would be to find an ice time that fits into both your and the instructor’s schedule. Generally speaking, during our Fall/Winter/Spring seasons, the only ice time we have available for private lessons are weekdays before 3:30pm.
Please contact Lori for more information about skating lessons or Sean for more information about hockey lessons.

Summer Camps
What is the difference between Hockey School and the Clinics?
The Hockey School is a comprehensive program to develop and improve all aspects of a player’s game. Each day will consist of two 1.5-hour on-ice sessions and two 1-hour off-ice sessions. Each morning on-ice session will focus on Power Skating and Puck Control and the afternoon focus will be Shooting and Stick Handling. On-ice practices will be intense, but fun. Off-ice sessions will include dry-land training (level of intensity depending on age).
The Clinics are only on-ice sessions. They don’t include any other activities like soccer, DEK Hockey and more.
What is the difference between Hockey School and Golf-Hockey Academy?
All campers, regardless of program, are part of the same on-ice training group. The difference is that for the morning off-ice session, Golf-Hockey campers will go to the Golf Dome with our golf instructors to develop their golf game, while the Hockey School campers will do other off-ice activities with their counsellors such as dry land training, team games, etc. All campers follow the same off-ice program in the afternoon.
What does my child need to bring to camp?
Lunch is ONLY included on Fridays (Pizza!). Otherwise we ask that your child bring a cold lunch Monday to Thursday. We also suggest that he or she brings snacks for in-between their training sessions. Your child’s food CANNOT contain any NUTS. We also ask you to label your child’s name on everything that belongs to him or her. They will need to bring their hockey equipment, DEK Hockey stick, running shoes, sunscreen, hat and a water bottle.
Do I have to be present to dress my child before he goes on the ice?
It’s the counsellors’ responsibility to get the kids all dressed up and ready to go on the ice. We ask that campers arrive at least 30 minutes in advance of their on-ice session. We will help them to become more independent when it comes to putting their hockey equipment on, but don’t worry– there will always be someone there to assist them.
My child has never played hockey. Can he or she register for this camp?
Unfortunately not, as this is not meant for beginners. We require hockey experience, such as participating in city hockey in the past year, or in our Advanced Tots Hockey/Total Hockey classes in the previous season, to take part in this camp. We do have Learn to Skate classes offered in the summer to get on the ice, and our full Tots Hockey/Total Hockey classes will resume in the fall.
Can goalies register for this camp?
We do not offer goalie instruction in our camp. (If you are looking for goaltending training, MTN Hockey is based out of our facility, although our camps are not affiliated with their programs.)
We have had goalies register with us and spend the day with our campers, but they will not receive any instruction during our on-ice sessions. However, they may receive plenty of shots on net during the practice.
We do welcome goalie registrations for our 3on3 Festival week. Again, they do not receive instruction in the morning sessions, but the afternoon sessions all week are a full 90 minute 3on3 game, so they get plenty of action!
Can I claim this as Sport/Fitness on my tax forms?
We recommend consulting with your accounting professionals, but it is our understanding that yes, our camp activities fall under the fitness credit for children.
Can I claim this as childcare on my tax forms?
No, you cannot. We are not a licensed daycare. We offer on-ice and off-ice sport-specific training. Therefore, we do not issue RL-24 receipts. Camp registrations may be used for the child fitness credits, but cannot be used for childcare benefits.
Can I drop my child off earlier in the morning and pick him up later at night?
We offer a daycare service starting at 7:30am and ending at 5:00pm. There will be counsellors present to take care of your child. We ask that you tell us in advance if you need the service so that we are aware of when they will be picked up. The extended hours service costs an additional $25/week.
Can I register for individual days?
Yes, this option is available provided that there is space available in the camp. If a camp is full for a given week, no drop-in registrations will be allowed, as we keep our instructor-camper ratio in mind.
We do not allow drop-in registrations for 3on3 Festival week, as that week is always full.

Skating and Hockey Instructional Programs
What are the class sizes?
Generally our class sizes average between 18 and 24 skaters, depending on the class type and age group. The number of instructors varies by the number of students on the ice. We keep our class sizes small so that students have more face-time with their instructors.
What level should I register my child in?
We have class descriptions for all of our programs, including Learn to Skate, Tots Hockey, Total Hockey, Clinics and Adult Instructional to help you find which class is suitable for you. If you need more information, you can call us at the rink at 514-695-4368. You can also consult our staff page to get into contact with the appropriate instructor for your program.
How can I register?
Registration can be done online for most of our programs! You can also call us at 514-695-4368 or stop by our front desk for more information.
I am a new registrant to your facility. Can I still register online?
Yes, with a few caveats. Online registration is available for all Beginner-level and 7 & Up Learn to Skate classes, Total Hockey, Clinics and Adult Instructional classes, provided you meet the age requirements.
For all other Learn to Skate and Tots Hockey classes, new customers will not be allowed to register online, because they will not have an account history in our system and therefore will not have the class prerequisites checked off in our registration system.
If you are a new customer and wish to register for one of these classes and meet the skill-level requirements (either from taking classes elsewhere or other experience), please call us at 514-695-4368. You can either register over the phone, or if you create your account online, we can tick off the requirements for your account on our end so that you can then register online.
I am an existing customer and I have/my child has just completed a class in the previous season, but your registration system says I do not meet the skill prerequisites. How can I register?
We apologize for the inconvenience. When adding skill requirements to class participants, our staff has to check off the prerequisites for each registrant in each class individually, which can mean over 600 participants in our Fall/Winter seasons. Therefore, it is possible that occasionally some registrants’ skills accidentally get skipped and don’t get checked off properly. If this is the case for you, please don’t hesitate to call us at 514-695-4368 and we can rectify that for you on our end.
However, if our instructors’ notes indicate that your child should remain in a different class, we will not be able to override their recommendations. In this case, we suggest that you register for the class your instructors have recommended for you; if, after the first week of classes of the next season, they find that your child is in fact ready to move up to the next level after all, they will move them up, provided there is enough space in the class to do so.
Do you have early registration?
For our Winter and Spring sessions, we have preregistration for current participants only. (Therefore, for Winter registration, only participants in the most recent Fall session can preregister. For Spring registration, only participants in the most recent Winter session can preregister.) If you do not meet these requirements, you must wait for general registration.
If you are eligible for early registration, but the online system is telling you that you do not meet the registration requirements, again this could mean that the registration priority was accidentally left off your account. With over 600 participants in our Fall and Winter sessions, our staff has to check off the registration priority for each participant individually and sometimes people get skipped by accident. Give us a call at 514-695-4368 and we will be happy to help you.
Please note that early registration is available only to current participants. If you have another family member on your account who would like to register for an upcoming season but was not registered in the most recent season, that person will have to wait for general registration.
Do you rent/sell equipment?
No, we do not. All participants must acquire their own equipment for their classes. For Learn to Skate classes, this means a hockey helmet with full visor/cage, skates and mittens at a minimum; for all hockey classes, this means full hockey equipment. Registrants will not be allowed onto the ice without the required equipment.
We recommend Play It Again Sports on 2973 St. Charles Blvd. in Kirkland, as it is the nearest supplier to our facility and they often have a good selection of gently used equipment for your needs. Otherwise, most sports apparel stores should be able to help you as well.
How do I know what to look for in skates for my classes?
What is your refund policy?
Our refund policy can be found here.
I tried to register for a class, but it is now full. Can I go on a waiting list? When will I receive news?
Yes, we do have waiting lists for our classes. If, when registering online, a class is full but says “Waitlist Available,” you may put yourself onto the waitlist. (There is no charge for the waitlist; you will not be charged until your registration is activated.)
We will contact you if a spot becomes available. You will receive an email to the address linked to your account (meaning, the one you used to create your account/the one at which you receive our communications) notifying you that you have been activated from the waitlist. You will then have 48 hours to confirm your spot by paying your registration fees. If you do not do so within 48 hours, your spot will be revoked and will then go to the next person on the list.
We have heard from some customers that our emails go to their junk mail folders, so be sure to check those occasionally.
How quickly do your classes fill up?
This depends on the class. Our Beginner and 7 & Over Learn to Skate, Beginner Tots Hockey and some Sunday Adult Hockey classes in particular tend to fill up quickly within the first few days of registration opening.
Will you open another class if the class I want is full?
Generally no. Our ice schedule is booked months, and sometimes up to a year, in advance. We have added classes to our schedule every fall over the past few years, but once registration has started, we cannot open another class, because our contract rentals (such as hockey and ringette associations) have their schedules set from the previous spring.
Occasionally, we do end up combining classes and changing a class on our schedule to another type, if we see that this would be more beneficial to our registrants or is more suitable for the number of participants registered.
Can I reserve a spot and pay later?
No, we do not accept any registrations without full payment at the time of registration.

Ice & Room Rentals
What are your rates?
Please see ice and room rental rates here.
How much ice time is included in a one-hour rental?
A one-hour rental includes 55 minutes of ice time and 5 minutes of ice resurfacing (Zamboni).
Can I get extra time?
You are allowed to use the ice for the time you have rented it. If you would like more time, you will have to pay for the additional time on your reservation.
What happens if my team/friends are late? Can we stay later?
No, because this delays the schedule for the rentals after yours. Please ensure your members are on time for their practice/game/training/meeting/etc.
What happens if my rental is late? Are you going to cut my time?
If our schedule is running late, rest assured you will receive the amount of time you have paid for. If you start late because our schedule is behind, you will simply finish an equivalent amount of time later. We will not cut you off if the delay is on our end.
Can I reserve an ice now and pay later?
No, we require full payment at the time of reservation.
I am looking for a regular ice rental/contract rental. How can I do so?
Please contact our manager Brent Sabino to discuss contract rental options.
What is required equipment for ice rentals?
Hockey helmets are mandatory for all customers. Full cages/visors are mandatory for participants under the age of 18. Cages/visors are optional but strongly encouraged for customers 18 years and over.
Can I book ice for a party?
Yes, this is possible if we have any availabilities. Standard rental rates apply. Please note that if you are planning to rent a room upstairs and have food, rental fees and restaurant fees also apply and are charged separately from the ice rental.
How many people are allowed on the ice at once?
We generally allow no more than 30 people on the ice at one time. Our rinks are about 66% the size of a standard arena, so it holds less skaters. For safety reasons, we don’t recommend having more than 30 people on the ice and reserve the right to limit the number of participants allowed on the ice at one time.
I have a group of people who want to get together upstairs. Do we have to rent the room, or can we just sit in the restaurant?
Renting the Red Lounge is the only way to ensure that there is enough room for your group to sit together as well as for our restaurant staff to know that there may be a larger order coming. Otherwise the space may not be available and you may have to sit in the general seating area.
Can I rent the Black Lounge (room overlooking rink 3)?
No, we generally do not rent out that lounge. We happily rent out the Red Lounge, because it can be closed off for your convenience and privacy, and closing this section does not prevent other customers from being able to see what is happening over Rink 1 from the rest of the common area. The Black Lounge is the only seating area available for Rink 3, and closing it off for rentals means customers who have come to watch family members do their activities on Rink 3 will have no place to do so. (The Red Lounge is roomier than it looks and provides ample room for your parties and meetings!)

Team Registrations
(For managers and players joining their teams)
How many players can I have?
The minimum is 4 players (3 players + 1 goalie or 4 skaters). The maximum is up to you; the more you have, the less ice time each player has. All players (regular and call-ups) must be registered onto the team by the March 1st deadline. We generally recommend 9 players + 1 goalie for convenience purposes.
Why is your deadline so early?
With our volume of teams, we need a few weeks to schedule games to give everyone enough notice. As well, we need to review each team’s registration to ensure that call-up players listed meet the requirements for their team’s level.
How much do I owe for my team?
Please ask your manager. Each team divides their $2700 fee differently according to how many players they have and their individual circumstances. Team managers are responsible for their team fees.
What happens if my team balance isn’t paid in full by March 1st?
You may not be scheduled for your first game until the balance is paid, which may mean you miss a game or games in your season. Team managers are responsible for ensuring their balance is paid in full by March 1st.
My team is mostly single-letter players, but I have one or two double-letters. What level will I be playing?
Your team will be placed in a tier according to the entire team’s performance during the exhibition period. If your double-letter players are “game changers,” your team will be placed at a higher level accordingly. Please note that if your team’s performance is significantly different than other teams in your tier following the exhibition period, Excellent Ice may move you to a different tier even after the regular season has started.
If I have one or two double-letter players on a mostly single-letter team, can I have a double-letter call-up?
No. Call-ups must be of a similar calibre to the average of the team. Excellent Ice reserves the right to refuse call-ups if they are significantly stronger than the rest of the team.
I can’t find a goalie. Can you give me one of yours?
No, sorry. Goalies are in high demand and short supply and there are not enough to go around! We understand finding goalies is difficult, and we suggest reaching out to your child’s teammates, friends, etc. That being said, call-up goalies are the exception to the March 1st deadline; you may bring in a call-up goalie at any point in the season, as long as they are of a similar calibre to the team. We would appreciate contacting us ahead of time so that we can put their name on the scoresheet.
My child has already signed up as an individual player (free agent), but has now been asked to play for a registered team instead. Can I switch?
Yes, this is possible. In this case, we would refund your individual registration, and then you would need to re-register onto the new team with the registration code provided to you by your team’s manager. Please contact Lori at lori@excellentice-kirkland.com to set up the switch.
Can a player play for more than one team?
Yes, no problem. However, it is up to the player to manage their schedule, as it is highly likely that at some point in the season there will be a schedule conflict between the teams. We cannot reschedule games due to a player’s absence.
I know for certain that I am missing players for my game on X date. Can I reschedule?
If we have enough notice (e.g. 3-4 weeks), we can make an effort to work around your schedule if it is possible, but every game change means a change for at least three other teams, so it is not always feasible. Please send an email to Brent at bsabino@excellentice-kirkland.com . If you are only missing a few players, then this is when your call-ups come in handy. Please note that the minimum amount of players needed is just 4 (3 players + 1 goalie), so it is possible to play with a smaller roster. (That just means more ice time for your players!)
Can a player play in a different age category than their own?
Players can play UP an age category, but they CANNOT play down. For instance, an Atom player can play Peewee, but a Peewee player cannot play Atom. However, if they are playing up a category, they must be playing for a team of similar calibre. E.g. an Atom BB player cannot play for a Peewee C team.
My team is Novice but I have one Atom player I want to play for me. Can you make an exception? His birthday just missed the cutoff date.
Unfortunately, no. An older category player cannot play on a team in a younger category. If you really want an older player on your team, the whole team would have to play up a category, so in this example your whole team could play Atom, even if they are mostly Novice-aged.
My child plays hockey for his high school. He is Bantam-aged but plays Peewee. Can he join a Peewee team with his friends?
Unfortunately not. High schools allow 3rd year Peewee players, but Hockey Quebec does not. We are following Hockey Quebec rules, therefore players must play according to their ascribed birth year categories.

Individual Player Registration (FREE AGENTS)
(If you are a player joining a registered team, see the info under “Team Registrations”)
How does being an individual player/free agent work?
Players register according to the age category they belong to. By filling out the question fields in the registration form, we then have a better idea of how many players are registered in a given calibre, and from there we can divide registrants into teams.
I have never played organized hockey before. Can I join the league?
No, this league is for experienced players. If you are interested in learning how to play hockey, we recommend joining one of our Tots Hockey or Total Hockey classes instead to develop your skills, so that you can join a league in the future.
For our instructional class participants, we’d recommend speaking with Coach Sean to ask if you are ready for a league. Generally, we’d ask for at least an Advanced Tots Hockey/Total Hockey calibre to be able to play.
I have friends I would like to play with. Can we be on the same team?
There is a field in the registration form asking you if you have any friend requests; please ensure you list the name(s) of the friend(s) you’d like to play with. We will make an effort to keep friend requests together, however, we cannot guarantee this. Friend requests will be considered based on player calibre and team needs.
What is the evaluation session for?
We started doing this in 2019 in an effort to better gauge our individual players’ skill level before even placing them on a team. It is included in the cost of the registration. This is a quick session that should last no more than an hour, and will simply be a scrimmage game so that our league supervisors can assess your current skill level and have a better idea of our teams’ calibres before heading into the season.
What are the different registration categories for?
We have separated PLAYERS and GOALIES in our individual/free agent registrations to make it easier for our staff to see how many goalies we have, so that they do not get lost in the shuffle of the many players we have.
Therefore, if you are a PLAYER, you will click on “Teams and Individual Players,” then “Individual” to register. If you are a GOALIE, you will click on “Free Agent Goalies” to register.
If you are joining a team instead (and are not a free agent), you will click on “Teams and Individual Players,” then “Join a Team,” after which you will enter the code your coach has provided to you to join their team.
Who is my manager/coach?
Individual/Free agent teams do not have coaches. We rely upon the players’ parents to take the lead in managing their child’s team. If your child is on a free agent team and you would like to volunteer as a coach behind the bench and/or to manage the team, we would greatly welcome the help. Please email Brent to express your interest, and if there is a need for a coach for the team, we will let you know. Thanks!
How many people are allowed behind the bench?
Other than players, we allow no more than two adults (aged 18 and over) per team, for crowd control purposes. If there are more than two parents interested in volunteering behind the bench, teams are welcome to set up a rotation to ease the load upon each manager/coach.
Can my friend/classmate/neighbour play as a call-up if my team is missing players?
No. Only registered players in the league who are assigned to the team may play. If you are a team manager/coach and you know your team will be missing a lot of players to the point where it may not be able to play on a given week, please email league manager Brent to inform him of the situation. In that case, we may be able to use call-up players from another individual team, or as a last resort reschedule the game.
If I am missing a game, can it be rescheduled?
No. Each game rescheduling involves rescheduling at least 3 other teams, and is done only as a last resort. If you have to miss your game, it would be the same as if you were missing one of your regular-season games with your municipal/school league. However, if there are enough players missing on a a team for a given game, we will reschedule it if at all possible.
Do I have to contact anyone if I am missing a game?
YES!!! We absolutely need to know if you will be absent. If your team has a volunteer coach/manager, please inform them as soon as possible. If your team does not have a coach/manager and you are a player, please contact Brent to let him know you will be absent. If you are a goalie, please contact Nicole. We need to know ahead of time who is missing so that we can find call-ups/reschedule if necessary.
